Swing Weight and Twist Weight: The Numbers That Matter

Almost every paddle listing leads with static weight – 7.9 oz, 8.2 oz – and almost every buyer uses it to choose. It is close to useless on its own. Two paddles at an identical 8.0 oz can feel like equipment from different sports, because what you feel in your hand is not how much mass the paddle has but where that mass sits.

Three numbers describe that, and none of them appear on the box. Here is what each one is, how it is measured, and what it changes about the way a paddle plays.

Swing weight: how heavy it feels in motion

Swing weight is the paddle’s resistance to being rotated – formally its moment of inertia about the pitch axis, measured from a pivot point near the bottom of the handle. Pickleball Science describes the machines that measure it as pendulums: they swing the paddle, time the oscillation, and compute the moment of inertia from the period.

It is usually quoted in kg-cm2. Pickleball Science puts the normal range at roughly 70 to 130 kg-cm2, with an average paddle landing near 105. In practice most paddles you will consider sit between about 100 and 120.

What it changes:

  • Higher swing weight – more plow-through and more stability on contact. The paddle keeps going when the ball arrives. It also takes longer to get moving, which is felt most in fast hands exchanges at the kitchen.
  • Lower swing weight – quicker to reposition, easier to reset, less power for the same swing.

Some real figures for scale, all from published third-party testing rather than manufacturer claims. Matt’s Pickleball measured the Six Zero Coral at 108 to 110 and the Coral Pro at 109 to 114, with Spinwave putting the Coral Pro Elongated at 117. At the other end, Pickleball Studio measured the ProKennex Black Ace Pro at 100 – a paddle we are citing only as a data point, since USA Pickleball delisted it effective July 1, 2025 and it is not legal in sanctioned play. That spread of 100 to 117 covers most of what you will feel between a paddle that is quick and one that is stable.

There is a catch worth knowing, because it explains why two people can disagree about the same paddle. Swing weight depends on where the pivot is, which in practice means where you grip. Pickleball Science notes that moving your hand one inch up the handle can cut swing weight by around 20 percent, and that the same paddle can compute anywhere from 68 to 145 kg-cm2 depending on the assumed pivot. A number is only comparable against other numbers measured the same way.

Twist weight: forgiveness, measured

Twist weight is resistance to rotation about the long axis – what stops the face turning in your hand when you catch the ball off centre. Pickleball Central’s lab describes it as the number that “effectively describes the stability of the paddle when the ball is hit outside the center of the face.”

This is the closest thing to a measurable definition of sweet spot. A high twist weight paddle punishes an off-centre hit less: the face stays square, the ball goes closer to where you aimed. A low twist weight paddle demands cleaner contact.

Typical values run in the low-to-mid 6s. For scale, in the Six Zero Coral Pro line Spinwave measured the Widebody at 7.10 and the Elongated at 5.90. That is a large gap inside a single paddle family, and it is almost entirely a function of shape – a wider face puts mass further from the long axis.

If you are below roughly 4.0, twist weight is probably the number that will improve your results most, and it is the one nearly every buying guide ignores in favour of static ounces.

Balance point: where the mass sits

Balance point is the simplest of the three – the spot where the paddle balances, quoted in points from the centre, where Pickleball Central notes each point is a quarter of an inch. A paddle at +6 points balances an inch and a half toward the head.

  • Head-heavy – more power, more swing weight, slower hands.
  • Head-light – quicker, easier to reset, less free power.
  • Even – what most all-court paddles aim for.

Balance point and swing weight are related but not the same thing. Balance tells you where the mass is; swing weight tells you how much that placement actually costs you in effort. Two paddles can share a balance point and differ in swing weight if one is simply heavier overall.

How the three interact

These numbers are not independent, and the trades between them are the whole reason paddle design is hard.

Adding lead tape at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions raises twist weight – more forgiveness – and raises swing weight as a side effect, because you have added mass away from the pivot. Adding it at 12 o’clock raises swing weight and power sharply while doing comparatively little for twist weight. Adding weight in the handle lowers the balance point and barely touches swing weight at all, which is why handle weighting is the usual way to make a paddle feel more solid without making it slower.

Shape does most of this before you touch it. Elongated paddles push mass away from the pivot: higher swing weight, more reach, lower twist weight. Widebody does the reverse. What to actually do with this

If you are choosing a first paddle: prioritise twist weight and a moderate swing weight, roughly 105 to 112. You want forgiveness while your contact is still inconsistent, and you want to be able to get the paddle up in time.

If you keep getting beaten in hands battles: your swing weight is probably too high. Look for something under about 110, or move weight from the head into the handle rather than buying anything.

If your drives lack pace but your technique is sound: a higher swing weight will give you more without swinging harder. Mid-110s and up.

If off-centre hits are spraying: that is twist weight, not swing weight, and no amount of static-weight matching fixes it. Look at widebody shapes.

If a paddle feels wrong but you cannot say why: compare swing weights before you compare anything else. It explains more first impressions than any other number.

Where to find the numbers

Manufacturers rarely publish swing and twist weight. The independent testers do, and that is most of what makes them worth reading: Pickleball Studio, Matt’s Pickleball and Spinwave all publish measured figures for the paddles they cover.

Compare within one tester’s set, not across testers. Different rigs, pivot points and protocols produce different absolute values for the same paddle, in the same way that independent spin measurements disagree by wide margins. The ranking inside a single tester’s data is reliable. The absolute number is not portable.

Add it in small increments and note where you put it.

The short version

Static weight is the number you are given and the least useful one you have. Swing weight tells you how heavy the paddle feels in motion, twist weight tells you how much an off-centre hit costs you, and balance tells you where the mass sits.
